wierd excel 2004 issue

so at work, I've got office 2004 running on 10.5.2

fairly regularly, but not all the time, when I start typing text in an excel cell, the letter and number keys will stop working after the first letter. delete and space and return still work, but letters and numbers don't. If I bring up "format cells" and then hit cancel, I can continue typing as if there were no issue.

this is very annoying, and I can't find anything on it.
