Wierd eBay bidding?

I am selling something on ebay and have a question on how people are bidding. When a person bids the bid amount is not shown but the highest bid is shown with the bidder. Well, I was just watching and the high bidder was jake with $20. Someone else bid a little later and the highest bid went up to $22 but the highest bidder was still jake. The problem is that jake only shows up once in the bid history. The guy that just bid must of bid higher but he is not the highest bidder, Jake still is and the high bid amount went up. I don't get it?

Proxy bidding.

Your opening price is $20.

I bid $30, my bid shows up as $20.

Someone else bids $25.

My bid automatically increases to $26, leaving me with the top bid.

But I only placed one bid.

I got it now. I didn't read the whole proxy bidding thing until now. I always assumed that the highest amount will be shown until someone else bids.
