I have a wierd buzzing noise coming from my system. The noise is not very loud, but just loud enough to indicate that something is wrong. The nouse comes and goes and I've pinppointed that the sound is coming from my PSU area.

It sounds like a bug is buzzing around... you know the sound a fly makes when it hits an indoor window and tries to escape... sounds like that.. just not quite as loud.

My guess is that the sound is coming from my PSU because there isn't anything in that area to create this sound.

I know nothing abou PSU units, so does this sound seious... or is there a known buzzing issue with my PSU?

Sounds like bad caps. I had a power supply that worked fine on my old system ( AXP1700+ ) but when I put it in a X2 3700+ system it started buzzing. After a couple hours of use it finally gave out. I opened it up and inside caps were oozing out of the top and bulging. The new heavier load pushed it over the edge - fried the input current limiting thermistor too.

Test the fan - grab a pencil with an eraser, go through the fan guard at the hub and push on it to slow the fan down and see if the sound stops or changes. If a pencil eraser won't fit through there, shut down your system, stick something in there to stop the fan blades completely (nothing metal) and start it up again.

If it's not the fan, you'll probably need to RMA it. If it is, you can replace it yourself, but that'll void the warranty so an RMA would be in order anyway.

I'm about 97% sure that it's not the PSU fan that's making the noise.

Now the sound is gone. It comes and goes.

It could be possible that it is the the inductors in the power supply vibrating. Does the buzzing sound change with the load on the computer?

I really can't make out the pattern.

My computer will be idle for a few hours (except for the hard drive thrashing) and then I'll hear the buzz. It's so sporadic that the noise will go away in about an hour.

And sometimes the noise will happen when I exit a game. It's hard to hear the buzz when the jet engine (video card fan) is running.

There is no set pattern that I can make out. I've searched the corsair forums, and apparently many people also have this problem with their PSU unit.

^^ LOL

I think it would either be the PSU fan or whining coils; you could replace the fan, or open up your PSU and douse your coils in [more] hot glue to dampen it.

I was thinking maybe you could try to record the "buzzing" sound when it happens and somebody who has good ears will be able to identify if it's either a dying fan sound or a whiny inductor.
After all, buzzing is not really the most accurate way to describe a sound ;)
Just a thought ...
