Width of page issues

I remember in the old version of FT (which we all knew and loved 😉) when there was one reply which was stupidly wide (someone posted a 683 character URL), only that one message would be wider than the width of the screen, and only that reply would cause the page to scroll.

Now, however, I have noticed that if you have a single reply causing that, the rest of the replies will be stretched out to that width 🙁 Which means, in threads like this, you have to scroll to view the majority of the replies.


Any changes going to be made to this, Jason?

I'm using opera Gary and I have no horizontal scrolling at all with that thread. Is it the link that made you scroll?
 
This is an image of what I am experiencing. The really long links are causing the whole page to scroll, whereas previously, it would only be the individual reply that would require scrolling.

IMHO the pages are too wide as is. For the non-forum pages the right side is usually out of sight, which can't be good for ads helping pay for the site.

The forums sometimes are too wide, usually ok. Long urls should wrap.

Check out the NY Times for a good width
 
The forums are 1024x768, no different than the main web site of anandtech.com. I tested it and at 1024 there are no horizontal scroll bars.

Well, maybe, but FuseTalk must have changed the way it works. Previously, only the individual reply that was wider than your screen width would require scrolling (this was so that only the individual reply would need scrolling, and because it loaded a reply at a time, it allowed the page to be rendered as it was being downloaded)


Jason, has this fact changed, or not? I'd like to know one way or the other so that I can hopefully try to narrow down what is happening.

Thanks for the clarification. Kind of sucks for people at 1024x768 that don't use maximized windows though. I'm sure I'll live though. 🙂
 
I'm using Opera 7.50 and that happens to me. The My Forums window is also insanely wide in Opera 7.50 and 7.23. It fits perfectly if I'm on my laptop (1280x800 widescreen).
 
The My Forums page is also too wide for me in IE6 at 1024x768, whether it's full screen or not, requiring me to scroll. One thing that could help it is if the Category column could have line breaks in it like the others do (and the topic name needs less breaks!). Also it could help to break the Last Updated column (put time under date).

Yep, I'm having scrolling on the My Forums page @ 1024 as well, IE6.

Yeah, I thought it was already established that the forums are designed for 1024 width? If your browser isn't maximized at at least 1024 horizontal resolution, you'll have a horizontal scroll bar.

I have tested this in ie6, firefox, mozilla. As long as nothing else is on either side and your are running 1024 there are NO horizontal bars.
 
. I concur with those that find one long url in one message warps the whole thread out of shape. And I am also using a Mozilla family browser. Apparently you don't test with anything but IE - serious mistake.

. Why are you designing at 1024 width anyway? Don't you care if the less fortunate can comfortably view your pages without having to scroll back and forth? Do you want to be thought of as just another bunch of techno-snobs?
. Either design at 640 or dynamic to fit the width of the viewing browser.

.And while we're at it, get rid of the section list on the left and put the drop down section jump menus at top and bottom, where God intended them to be!
