Widow-burning shocks India

"The burning to death of a widow on her husband's funeral pyre has shocked much of India, but unrepentant members of her village have proudly deified her and claim her sacrifice will help end a drought crippling their state. "

Man, North Carolina's gotta a pretty bad drought too...but at least our backwoods hicks don't burn people. Besides, don't these people realize that FIRE and DROUGHT aren't a good combo?

if you'd bother to learn about the culture, it was common for a widow to throw herself in her husband's funeral pyre. no one threw her in

Don't judge other cultures.

"The last reported incident of sati was the death of 18-year-old Roop Kanwar, widow of Mal Singh, in the Rajasthan village of Deorala on September 4, 1987, which sparked national and international outrage.

Police charged Sumer Singh, Mal Singh's father, with forcing Roop Kanwar to sit on the pyre with her husband's body. Pushpendra Singh, his other son, was accused of lighting the pyre.

Both were acquitted by an Indian court for lack of evidence.

Yes, I'm glad that my culture has evolve beyond this barbaric practice. And, I'm sure that my culture is not an ideal culture....but I'm sad to see people still do this kind of things to each others. This practice was outlaw since 1829, and isn't supported by the Indian Gov'.

You're not French are you? Just because someone, or several someones, does something, doesn't make it right. If someone does something stupid, even if he gets a billion people to do it for five thousand years it's still a stupid thing to do. I'm not talking culture, I'm talking murder.

"According to some, members of her family, including her two sons, tried to talk her out of committing sati, but "like a woman possessed", she simply dressed up and followed the funeral procession, then sat calmly on the pyre.

Others, however, claim the widow was forced on to the blazing pyre by relatives."

Wouldn?t you want to help saving the woman even if she is trying to commit suicide instead of throwing rock at people that is trying to save her?

What kind of ?loving, peaceful & vegetarian? Buddha that would want a human sacrifice?

Never said it was right or wrong. I simply said don't judge other cultures. Because there are cultures out there that do things VERY differently from what we're used to, and that doesn't necessarily make them crazy or weird or <add negative adjective here>.

It's not the fact that they do things differently that they are crazy or weird, it's the things they do. It's not a matter of judging cultures, it's a matter of pointing out stupidity. I don't care who you are or where you're from, stupid things are stupid things, period.

the kind that likes his widow meat extra crispy....

BTW I believe Indians are Hindu not Buddhist. Though I haven't read the article so... my opinion means little...

Whatever your position on this you must admit it is a dangerous position to define aspects of a cultural identity as wrong. Historically that has led to nothing but trouble. I doubt that actually happens very often though, I think more often it's polity disguised as moral righteousness...

You're kidding, right? I'm not judging their culture, someone was murdered. The lady was burned to death. They threw stones at her rescuers. Am I missing something? I would say burning people alive is both crazy, and stupid, and I have plenty of other negative adjectives for it. Just because you burn enough people to death over the years that it becomes the norm, doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do. If we stopped punishing rapists and made rape part of our culture, it wouldn't make it any more okay to go around raping people. Culture has become a euphamism for doing crazy and stupid sh!t.

(sadly virgins are not what they are cracked up to be, the psych. effect is about all there is to it, and like most similar effects doesn't last nearly long enough....but I digress....)

ouch, owned :)

Got a good point though, I mean, when the heck did it become an acceptable thing to burn people alive?
I'm sorry but if you burn someone for such a stupid a$$ reason you had best be able to take a little commentary (
rolleye.gif
how pathetic that this comment even has to be made, thank you PC Nazi's, you have made the world such a better place).

And then there is a bunch of crap about how people can't do things in moderation (ethnic slurs and intolerance are bad, but trouncing anyone who even come close to either of those is extreme....)....but it's all moot because it won't change anything....blah....

you're assuming that she was murdered. just because the people stopped rescuers from rescuing her doesn't mean she was murdered. you forget one important thing, she did it on her own accord. thats what sati is. and that should be her right to do it if she wants to.

I don't really know what happened, because I wasn't there, but the article linked to states:

<Police in the central state of Madhya Pradesh are viewing Tuesday's event as murder, however, and have arrested 15 people for allegedly forcing 65-year-old Kuttu Bai on to a blazing funeral pyre to enact the grisly custom known as "sati". >

Maybe or maybe not, I don't think the people that threw her on the fire would admit to doing so.

This cultural practice should end.

LOL I can't believe no one has said this yet...

"There's only two things I hate! People who are completely intolerant of other people's cultures...and the DUTCH!!!"
