Not sure how widespread it is. People at work were calling around when our city lost power. From calling around, it seems like there were problems everywhere. National Grids web site made it look like the northeast was screwed. It was probably a bunch of localized events that caused a misinterpretation at work.
Maybe they had some equipment down for maintenance and didn't expect as much demand as they got. If they didn't think it would be as cold as it got they might not have been ready.
Apparently there was an issue with underground power lines that affected about 70 customers in Fayetteville Arkansas between 1:15pm and 3:00pm. Maybe it's the mole people getting ready for a massive attack.
I think there may have been a few hundred without power in the morning in MA but the news makes no mention of these power outages. Boston and the surrounding areas have had power all day.
