what's the native resolution? if you're using anything else squishalarity may ensue, especially if you change from the native aspect ratio too.
 
You can't run an LCD at higher than its native resolution, the pixels just don't exist.

You can run it lower, for example 800x600, then it is still really 1024x768 but the card or monitor fills in the extra pixels with in-between colors.
