Widescreen tvs for under $900

That's a lot of ground you are covering there. If you don't know already, I would suggest going to Avsforum.com and reading up on HDTV, SDTV, 16:9 and 4:3. I've literally dedicated months to this and still don't know everything. Here's a link to the CRT section.

To get you started though, the TV's you linked aren't the best in the world. First, JVC and Phillips have had known problems with these sets. I would again, go to avsforums to see the specifics. Also, the 26hf84 is an HDTV (considerably more expensive), which has a nice picture but has had problems with a horizontal glitch across the center of the screen. I had the 30hf84 for a short time, and it had that problem as well (same brand, just 4" bigger, same parts).

I would reccomend the 30" WS or 32" 4:3 HDTV sony @ circuit city for $900 even. I also like the 32" 4:3 panasonic @ circuit city for $800. Remember, regular 4:3 screens @ 32" screens offer about the same amount of screen as a Widescreen 30" tv, so don't discount them. They also show regular tv MUCH better, without annoying side bars. They are incredible sets for the price.

If HDTV isn't a concern, then a 32" regular sony, toshiba, panasonic can be had for a lot cheaper and offer better picture then the ones you listed. If you are dead set on one of those you linked, I guess the JVC. I simply don't trust Toshiba HDTV anymore and I've heard too many horror stories about Phillips Widescreen.

I know about those 4:3 screens but I can't stand 4:3 screens. They need to be true widescreen, are there any links you can provide to tell me abou the horror stories about those screens? I could have easily gotten a 20" tv that is 4:3 with the "16:9" zoom capability but I don't want a fake HDTV. I want a true 16:9 resolution.

Ok, good. Then I recommend the 30" sony @ cc for $800 (scratch that, it's $900) or the 30" sanyo @ walmart for $650.

Two of the links you mentioned are not HDTV and the middle one I've said had problems.

One bad review of the 26hf84

Sony would be my choice too. I've got a 27" WEGA flat CRT that I absolutely love even though it's not HD compatible. When it gets replaced, I'm probably going with a Sony WEGA HD widescreen.

A good friend of mine just bought a Sony HDTV WEGA 4:3 TV - I think it is a 34 or 36 inch screen. When I was over at his house, he was showing the Lord of the Rings wide screen ed movie on it and I was disappointed at how "grainy" the picture was when you looked at faces and other things of detail. I don't think DVD's have HDTV resolution picture and all. But I don't notice that grainyness on my conventional 27-inch TV.
