I did a quick search on these forums, and found no quick answer to my perhaps silly question:

Will my games (such as HL2, BF2, Far Cry, etc) support a monitor such as the Viewsonic VX2025 (1680x1050) without having blackspace?

I know BF2 doesn't let you adjust the FOV, so how will it handle this?

Thanks.

HL2 will be great with WS. BF2 chops a little bit of the very top and bottom of the screen but IMO is worth it. Far Cry is also hackable to be WS.
For any questions I would recommend the Wide Screen Gaming Forum.

Yeah, forcing widescreen on BF2 essentially zooms in so that the horizontal is filled, thus cropping off the vertical and additionally distorts the HUD. Better to play at 1400x1050 for the full view and normal HUD.

Do you think its worth it?

After reading some reviews, it seems the 2007WFP banding issue has been fixed, so I'm looking at that seriously (350 USD approx)

Thanks.

It was sort of fixed though. Apparently the disabled a feature so the banding would go away.

Also, as a cheaper alternative there is the Viewsonic VX2025. I also am looking to buy a widescreen monitor and will probably get the Viewsonic.

I suppose it's like with TV's and depends upon available content and your preference. As mentioned recently, a 1680x1050 display is a wide screen alternative to 1280x1024. Obviously, a 1600x1200 "standard" screen is almost as wide but significantly taller so it may be better all around but generally costs more and will be more costly to run games at maximum resolution -although there's no reason they could not be run at reduced size that would partially defeat the purpose but still, the equivalent wide resolution of 1600x1000 or whatever is an option (and likewise the smaller display at standard 1400x1050). It also depends upon how you prefer to use the available desktop area.
