Widescreen on X1950 Pro AGP

I currently use a P4 2.8 and Radeon 9800 Pro. I mostly play a combat flight sim called IL2 Sturmovik and all the Battlefield series, except the newest one and a little HL 2 and COH. This is at 1024x768 with roughly medium settings.

Was thinking of upgrading to all the C2D stuff but now considering holding off for a year or so until more of the new equipment and software matures. I would like to get a new widescreen monitor now though, 20 or 22 inch, and for this reason I obviously need to upgrade.

Do you think the new X1950 Pro AGP can handle the higher res at reasonable frame rates and settings?

I'm sure the X1950Pro, even in AGP flavor, will be fine running at 1680x1050. I am using a dual core 3800X2 @ 2.6Ghz along with a X1800XT and I play CS:S and HL2 with 6XAA and HQAF. I run BF2 with all options set to high, along with 4XAA and HQAF and my frame rates are usually between 75-120fps.

I don't see why not. Your CPU is probably going to be the bottleneck.
I've got a X1950pro pci-e on the way with a new system that includes a 2007FPW, so I'm hoping it will be able to handle the higher res. I read lots of reviews and it looks like the 1950pro is a bit faster than the 7900GS, so I'm thinking it will be fine.

That is good to hear. I was kind of thinking the CPU would end up being the bottleneck too. If that does in fact turn out to be the case is it worth fiddling around with trying to overclock my CPU? I have 0 experience with that. My heatsink and fan are stock and I have an Antec 450W power supply.

first of all, 2.8Ghz is NOT a bad bottleneck . . .simply raise the AA/AF and offload more "work" to the videocard . . .

i have a P4/AGP system also . . . but i already upgraded my 9800xt to x850xt and will probably go for the x1950p

my 2.80c P4 is at 3.31 ghz . . . it gives a stock A64 3200+ a run for it's money

what MB do you have? . . . many Intel MBs don't support O/C'ing

generally, o/c'ing a P4 is easy . . . raise your FSB incrementally until you get instability . . . then back it down a bit.

Head over to the CPU/Overclocking forum for pointers.

. . . and welcome to ATF :)

X1950Pro is shown to be on par with a 7900GT, so yes I would guess it will work just fine.
