Widescreen on Laptops is teh suck!

I'm not liking the current trend. It's promoted like the next 'sliced bread' or something.
We have an older laptop at work with 1280 x 1024, a perfect size. Lots of real estate...

We needed a few new ones and all you can get now is really 1280 x 800. :thumbsdown:
The screen is just not high enough to be useful. Working on two documents side by side is pretty much useless.

Customers must be stupid or someting... or is it just me..... you get less useful screen area just so you can play a DVD in widescreen.... Ohhh woah great. :roll:

The market for people who want to watch movies on thier laptops is bigger than the market for people who want to do useful stuff with them, I'd guess.

I like widescreen. I only use a laptop for Office Apps, Internet, and Movies. So, it works out well.

Yes, and they are all implementing the GLOSSY screen too. I thought Fry's was selling mirrors, lol

I kind of have the best of both worlds, anyway, 4:3, 16x12...

i can't imagine working on an 800 pixel tall screen any more. you can barely see one whole paragraph by the time you get all the menus and crap that has to be there. and it isn't like 1280 pixels is wide enough to work on things side by side (imho you need at least 1400 for that)

i note that most thinkpads and dell's latitude line are still 4:3.

It's terrible.
Another issue. I write software for test and measurement that we use in the lab here. The old laptop I mentioned was (and still is) used as a portable test bench and I've taken it out inn the field for trouble shooting...and so on.
The software I wrote was made to fit a 1024 pixel high screen (Lots and lots of controls, tabs and indicators) so I made it narrow and tall so people could use a spread sheet, word, or somethikng else on the other half while working on stuff. A real good layout.

Now we needed to get more laptops like this and we ended up with widescreen POS laptops and guess what! Nothing fits anymore. I had to change the layout of the software to low and wide instead of tall and narrow. It blows!! Everyone hates it.

GrrrrrrAAAaaargh. On top of that the screen is shiny like a mirror. Reflexes to the max. Complete POS.

I guess the reason was stated earlier. People like watching DVDs.......

I'm not a big fan of widescreen...games suck on it, you lose a lot of vertical resolution unless you get a huge screen, and yet you still get letterboxing on DVDs:roll:

Shouldn't have bought cheap laptops with low-quality screens. 17" 1920x1200, ftw.

What you really need is a laptop w/ a 30" screen and 2560 x 1600 resolution, 'cause anything less means your laptop sucks ass.

i like wide screen better.. for work i've used a wide screen and a regular screen, and i use autocad, so i have side panels on the sides and stuff, so it's a lot more useful for me to have more screen on the sides

YES... and THANK YOU for pointing out this crapola trend.

my old inspiron 8200 has the most badass screen.. 1600x1200 and it is nicer than desktop displays by leaps and bounds. And it's only 15in.

I guess building on a good product clashed with "fvck it, we can make more with super shat, cheaper, lower-rez, lower-qual screens"

Same on my notebook. Almost makes me wish I bought the Dell 2405 last year instead of the 2005 for my desktop . . . but budget constraints.

I'd love to have twin 30in 2500x1600 panels on my desk, but I'd need to get a new desk . . . and most likely a second video card too. I don't think a single X1900XT would be enough to drive a res like that in newer titles.

Lol, I had the same laptop. My 8200 with 1600 x 1200 looked great! I will say though I like the screen on my 15" Powerbook better though (even with less resolution, the thing is just perfect).

I like my 17" 1440x900 laptop. I agree that 1280x800 is pretty small, and I think 1680x1050 would be ideal. Unfortunately for me the only other option on my laptop was 1900x1200 which was too much for me on my old 17" 9300.
