Widescreen LCD-TV size versus CRT size

Been curious about this as I look for a replacement for my various tubes around the house...

If a widescreen LCD is boasted as being 17" (diagonal of course) how does it compare in actual size to a normal 'ol 4:3 17" CRT? What kind of math can I do to get a comparitive size in width and height of a widescreen TV? My logic says that a 17" widescreen will appear smaller than a 4:3 tube, because the measurement is spanned over a wider area.
