I'm looking for a replacement for a failing 17" CRT monitor. I would like to go with a LCD but I can't really deside if I could go with the widescreen or not.

The computer using the monitor won't be playing any more, all it will be doing in standard office work and some mild gaming.

Widescreen for sure. Standard office work becomes much more enjoyable with a 20" Widescreen LCD monitor. Because it allows you to have two things open next to each other, just like having 2 monitors next to each other. I love it, and I wouldn't want to go back ever since I got my 20" widescreen monitor. And for gaming it's pretty sweet as well, pretty much all games support widescreen resolutions @ 1680*1050 for example.

But what about older games that don't support widescreen resoultions?
The computer is quite dated. It might get replaced next year.

It doesn't matter when your computer will get replaced, really, as you can keep your screen between as many builds as you want. I definitely say go for widescreen, I just recently got a 24" widescreen to replcae my old 17" and it's sex in a box.

I use a 19in widescreen at work where I can have two windows side by side if necessary, and a 20in 4.3 at home. I also have a 19in widescreen at home, but didn't like it for my gaming computer. No rational decision, just used to my Dell 2001FP. The widescreen is on a secondary machine now.

There is no right and wrong, just what you like better.

I'd go with widescreen as well. Actually went from a 4:3 17in LCD to a Dell 2005FPW to my current Dell 2407FPW. My only regret is not being able to afford anything bigger.
