So I'm at the Super Wal Mart by my house this weekend & they've been dickin' around with their TV/Electronics section and it's taken forever, but it's finally done. Now all the TV's are up on wall displays and the video games are in their place, etc.e tc.

One thing that caught my eye right away is that I'm seeing more & more of these 30"/32" widescreen HDTV's poppin' up. I know Sony gave a stellar effort in this arena and probably still has some of the best HDTV's out there with their Super Fine Pitch CRT's, but they seem to be going away.

Now, since CRT takes care of all the SDTV issues we have w/ panel TV's, does this mean that somebody out there........(IIRC, the 2 I saw at Wal Mart were Phillips and ???).......is getting the message that tubes may still have a place in homes for a while to come??? (Ahhh, the old-school answer to resolution issues!)

??????

I hate owning anything that I can't move, and a big screen CRT is one such thing. A 32" HDTV CRT must weigh close to 200 lbs!

I wonder what is the difference in the cost of manufacturing CRT vs LCD or plasma.

For the money, it's difficult to beat the PQ of a CRT.

But the real reason they're still around is that they're cheaper than competing technologies. That advantage is starting to diminish, and I expect as plasma and LCD panel prices continue to fall we'll see less and less CRT TVs.

Prices may fall, but quality will remain unmatched(?)

It's straight economics.

CRT technology has been around for 50 years. It's perfected. To this day it offers the best image quality. but it's reaching it's end of life. Therefore it is cheap. But there is no doubt that they offer the best image quality.

Seeing as we're gonna have a solid 3 (480, 720, 1080.....whether i or p) resolutions for the unforseeable future........AND.........mix that in with WS vs. 4:3 and there has never been a better time than the present for a screen, tube, panel........whatever...........to allow us to see all of these resolutions in their best quality for some time to come.

Panels can't do it.

CRT's can.
