I need a pc for mainly doin lotsa scientific nd computation intensive tasks (and some games as well :p).....

but as usual stuck wid budget constrains nd limited choices :(

well 1st of all wich way 2 go p4 or XP

ive thought up of da following sys (ull get da idea of price range as well :) )

cpu: 2.6ghz@800
mobo: have 2 choose from a 865 board and from among msi, intel, gigabyte and perhaps abit and asus

or
cpu:2700XP
mobo: some nforce2 choice is between msi k7n2, chaintech 7njli (is this nforce?)..coud find only those :( maybe get asus nforce2 as well

  • I wud prefer built in graphics solutions i guess, does built in graphics card affect the performance of mobo without it in neway????

I may look into overclocking but since im new to it i wud prefer 1 wid easy bios settings to handle (wont wanna do ne physical thingy)

BOTTOMLINE
im a little constrained wid choices nd money so want 1 tht wud offer best bang for money but shud provide good computation power. I wud doin lotsa speech, image nd other multimedia processing so keep tht in mind.

Thnx guys

Well depends on the programs.. XP's do better with programs that are unoptimised for P4.. and P4 do well in things optimised for it (and streaming applications).. if you get what i mean.

I'm guessing scienfitic calculations = FPU beef, so XP would indeed be faster than the P4.

yes lots of fp calculations wid cpu running at 100% load lots of time... calculating nd stuff u c

so i guess ill go for XP rite now .... esp Athlon64 rite up at the corner

is k7n2g the mobo choice... i dont have much in mobo dept maybe chaintech, abit and asus
i guess ill prefer builtin graphics but do tell me if there is ne major prob wid thin mobo

thnx

That's correct, get the Athlon XP chip, and spend the savings on a spelling and grammer checker.

I agree amd's are a bit better in the category of use, and as long as that is what the use is it really is the best for you....Want to do multimedia, rendering, and other stuff the p4 2.6c is the better choice. Money a fctor amd is likely always a good option.

The Abit NF7-M or Epox 8RGA+ (I think) have onboard graphics. Would be a better choice than that crappy MSI.

I have a xp1600+ overclocked to 2100+ and my friend has P4 2.4. We tested our computers using the same program programmed in Matlab. It is simply number crunching program using unconstrained optimization with analytic gradient and so on.
My XP ran faster than P4 2.4 about 20%.
Our conclusion is that AMD rocks!
Get the XP and if I were you, I would get barton 2500+ and follow the direction of gurus here.
Hope this helps.
