i got a AM3 compatible mobo and was looking into upgrading the cpu from the sepheron it has in it. Was looking at:

-Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
OR
-FX-4100

wich one is the better choice? Not its not for hardcore gaming just for my 4 year old son to play sonic on 😛

For your specific case,I'd go with the cheaper option. If that's 4100 then be it. Note that 965BE is faster chip when both are at their default clocks(out of the box).
 
Make sure to double check the motherboard cpu compatible list. Possible compatibility issues are always possible.
 
Oh yes notty22 is absolutely correct. Check if your board supports any of the 2 listed!
