Ok, I've been at this for a couple of days now, and I'm fairly PC literate, and I would value any assistance anyone can give, because this has me beat.
My system: Dell XPS 7100
Motherboard: Dell 0GK1K2
Chipset AMD 785G
Southbridge AMD SB700

Firstly, can I say that both the following cards installed into Windows 7 64 bit, were displayed in Device Manager as working properly. They were installed individually (ie, not both on the board at the same time!)
I installed a Dell network card DW 1525 and got no signal, no LEDs lighting up and wouldn't connect. I suspected it might be faulty, so bought a brand new Asus PCE-N15 network card, and it installed fine. However, again there are no LEDs lighting up on the rear of the card and it wont connect to net. Both sets of drivers installed fine, and both cards appeared in Device Manager. There are two PCI-e slots on board and I've tried both modems in both slots, both with no joy.
I'm currently connected using Netgear N3100 USB NIC. I installed it at the rear of the PC to check the signal, and it's working perfectly. Three laptops in the house also pick up the signal perfectly, so the router is fine. Everything else is working fine on the board, and since two separate cards don't work, and no LEDs are lit, this suggests that there's a problem with power to and from the slots, but then how would they be picked up in Device manager? Also, why just these two slots and no other devices on the board are affected?
Is this a known fault, or can it be fixable? I've done all the chipset drivers, card drivers and so on. Checked signal, moved PC, all the usual, recommended stuff.
Anyone have any ideas, or need more info about this?
Cheers in advance.
Michael.
