Wi-Fi Location Finder?

Arkaign

Lifer
Had a request from one of my clients to find out if this is available/possible.

He has some fairly large facilities (500,000 SF), with complicated layouts, and he would like the ability to walk around with a Wi-Fi-enabled tablet PC, and to have real-time location tracking and marking capabilities as he examines the facility. He was wondering if a field of Wi-Fi routers or other special hardware is available to assemble an array capable of this, as well as any software solution for the mapping/marking aspect.

TIA!

I do not know how accurate it is but there are companies like AirDefense that can do this by adding devices everywhere and triangulating wifi signals, but I am not sure how accurate it would be.. probably within a couple meters.

It's called location based services and cisco, ekahau, wherenet and aruba all have offerings to do it. Accuracy generally depends on how many access points you have.

Awesome info guys. Hey Spidey, any idea on costs? Recommendation from the group you listed? An off-the-shelf solution would be best in our case.

i would think the cost for the number of devices you would need to cover multiple 500,000sf buildings would outweigh any benefits. might as well redo the infrastructure at that point ;x
