I've been setting up a home file server and have been having issues with LAN speeds not being where they should be. All my equipment (server; laptop; desktop; router; etc) all support up to Gigabit speeds. My server was just running Windows 10 and recently switched to using an OS called OpenMediaVault. The results were slightly different, but still an issue for me
When transferring a file between my wired Windows desktop and the Windows server, it reached gigabit speeds, unless I had my laptop connected to it's shares as well (a MacBook with either macOS or Windows via bootcamp; didn't matter). At this point it usually went down to 20 megabits per second, as well as the Mac. The Mac with macOS never reached 100 megabit speeds as it seemed to be some strange issue with SMB/CIFS shares from Windows or something.
I now have OpenMediaVault, a text-based OS that is maintained via a web console. With this OS, the wired Windows desktop has gotten gigabit speeds successfully each time. The laptop (macOS or bootcamped Windows) however, while it did the first night, went down to about 250-300 megabits per second after that. The Mac is the most recent model; the router supports ac Wi-Fi (1300 megabits per second) and everything, so I can't understand why I'm losing the gigabit speeds.
Does anyone have some ideas or some things to try? For the Mac I use macOS much more than Windows; so I'd be looking for a macOS solution if you had any software ideas vs. hardware. Any help is appreciated!
