Hey people of AnandTech, this is my first post here. Hopefully you guys will help me in resolving Wi-Fi issue I am facing. So here it goes...

Our school is located about 5 kms from town. Therefore, ISPs available here are unwilling to give wired Internet connection to the school. Hence, we use a local Internet service called ArcTel who provide wireless Internet connection to the school.

They have installed a receiver on top of the school building. A LAN cable runs from the receiver to the router which distributes Internet to all the connected computers.

The first time you power on the device and try to access Internet from any computer, you are taken to a login page the IP address of which is 10.11.23.1

This is a one time process after which you can access Internet from all the computers.

The IP address or gateway of the router is 192.168.88.1

Currently we have set all the computers to use automatic IP address (They all are running Windows by the way). Even the DNS server setting is set to auto. But if you were to manually assign IP address to each of the computer like 192.168.88.90, 192.168.88.91 etc. the computers will be unable to access Internet unless you manually specify DNS server as 10.11.23.1

Now, coming to the real issue at hand. While there is no problem accessing Internet on the computers, the same cannot be said about Wi-Fi access. I don’t have a laptop to test if it again works on a system running Windows, but when I try to access Internet via Wi-Fi on my mobile running Android, I am unable to do so.

It shows that I am connected and all. If I press and hold and select “Modify network” option, I can see that I am assigned an IP address beginning with 192.168.88…

If I check “Show advanced options”, the proxy settings is set to “None” and IP settings is set to “DHCP”. But if I change that to “Static”, I can see that “Gateway” is 192.168.88.1, “Network prefix length is 24 and there is “DNS 1” and “DNS 2” option. By default under “DNS 1”, it shows as 192.168.88.1

Now, even if I change the “DNS 1” to 10.11.23.1, I am still unable to access Internet on the device.

So, please people what’s the setting I am missing that is preventing Internet access on the mobile device?

Any insight in this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Need a bit more info on this one in order to figure out the issue. What is the manufacturer and model number of the router being used to provide wifi? It seems like a slightly different configuration is being issued to the wifi clients when it shouldn't be.
