Wi-Fi getting really slow intermittently

Hello,
Lately my home Wifi has been getting really slow on a semi regular basis. Usually it lasts for about 10 minutes and goes every 20 minutes. I don't disconnect from Adium and I can't seem to update or get updates from Twitter. According to iStat it slows down to 1kb/s. It's been slowly getting more frequent. My router is a Netgear WGR614v6 and I have the DNS server set to Google's.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Andrew

If you haven't already, you might want to take wifi and your router out of the picture and see if you still have the problem. Assuming that your modem and router are two separate devices, you could do this by unplugging the power to your modem and the router, and connect the modem directly to your computer via an ethernet cable and then plug the modem back into the power source. If you still have the problem after doing that you will know that it isn't a router or wifi issue. I recently had a similar intermittent problem and got excellent telephone support from Comcast to diagnose and fix the problem.

It could be a problem with the wifi NIC, or as has been said the router itself.

What security are you using? Could your signal be being accessed, resulting in less bandwidth?

First thing to check for is interference. I'm assuming your router is 802.11g so that means you're running at 2.4GHz. Things that cause interference are cordless phones that operate at the same frequency. Also microwaves.
