Whys it not shut down properly anymore?

Hey, my old comps still goin strong 😀 cept it dosent shut down from the start menu. If i use the start menu it just closes stuff down and gives a blank screen but its still on, same thing with reset and hitting the off button dosent help much even with the blank screen 🙁 , so i have to hit the button to turn it off while windows is still running. Is my mobo knackered? its a Intel Garibaldi D850GB (Tehama chipset) with a P4 1.7 willamette // 128MB RDRAM//Geforce 2 MX 400 (bit broke but still seems to work okayish)// 40 gb hdd. Is it the mobo thats causing this? no biggie but if i wanted to replace it could i do it cheaply and easily?

Have you tried shutting it down in safe mode? Most shutdown issues are software or driver related, and safe mode is a good way to test that. Also, what OS are you running?

Aha! good idea. Just finished tryin that and well it did things diffrently in safe mode, it came up with the old win 95/98 screen saying "it is now safe to turn off your computer" wow! never seen that in years but anyways how can i make it do this from normal mode instead if it just trying to turn itsself off and crashing?

Oh ya and its Windows ME (yea i know YUK but its the 2nd best op sys ive ever had tbh 😛)

ME is a nightmare ... see if you can do a windows update it might help. If not then there is a function in windows called quick shutdown or something ... turn that off and see if that helps. I can't remember where this was but hunt around.

You probably have some application that is causing the shutdown problems (Very common with 98/Me, especially things like Norton, Mcafee). Try removing unused programs, and clearing out msconfig startup, see if that helps at all.

This can sometimes happen with a corrupt audio file, if you use any sounds to close programs or the windows exit sound shut them off.

Bleep

Isnt it weird and annoying how things just break and start working again for no reason? Yep it now shuts down properly and i didnt even get the chance to try anything. That comps been quirky since we moved house so ill keep an eye on the thing. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
