What's the front passenger seat have to do with shotguns?

Is it because I touch myself at night?

Back in the coach days (horse and buggy), the passenger had a gun to fight off indians and brigands.

In the old days a stagecoach had a driver on the left side and a guy on the right with a shotgun for protection. You figure it from there.

This goes back to stagecoach times and was coined by the wells fargo coaches in particular. The driver would handle the horses while one man would sit next to him with the shotgun.

Ergo, riding shotgun.

Yea, well shotguns were more effective against bandits who would try and jack stage coaches, so a man would always be ready to fire a round of buckshot at bandits.

Also during the MOB's peak years some one would often ride in the front passangers seat where they would hold a shotgun. And in a police car back in the 30-50's there would often be a shotgun mounted in the passangers side of the car where his partner would ride.
