That's a good question. Some people will buy it. Wow, I would think it should come with two ATX connectors to power two motherboards. =)

What do you mean why? Sure it's pointless now, but elite rigs these days (FX55/SLI Ultras) are already needing ~550 Watts or greater. In two years, I can see 700 Watts being needed to ensure stability at the top end.

Before too long, these will be needed.

It's an ETX/SSI form factor PSU, which means it's designed for highend server boards. The type of systems that have 4+ CPU's, gigs of RAM, more hard drives than you can shake a stick at, and whatever else an admin may want to cram in a case. It's still overkill, but most definitely not intended to be used with a home system.

Imagine this board maxed out: Thunder GC-HE (S4520)

I guess you guys (gender neutral if any ladies posted) have not heard. This is obviously to power your computerized house so hackers can do cruel things like turning off hot water in your shower and changing your alarm to wake you in the middle of the night.:)

All these server arguments would make sense, if i didn't know that the reason they are hard to get is because alienware is buying them. when did Alienware computers mini-cities

What are you talking about? The reason they are hard to get is because they aren't available for sale yet. I don't see any reason why Alienware would want these, nor why you would be privy to such information. Companies like Supermicro sell Itanium boards that recommend 500W PSU as a minimum for system stability. Will there be some idiot enthusiasts who will buy them for no good reason? Yes, but there won't be nearly enough of them to justify PCP&C releasing such a product in the first place.

I would predict otherwise. I have noticed that CPUs are being manufactured on smaller dies. I have noticed that power consumption trends popular in the laptop world are making it bit by bit into the desktop. I have noticed technologies like Cool 'n Quiet becoming a much welcomed feature by budget builders and disposable income enthusiasts alike (ex. - nobody wants their HTPC to sound like a PC any more often than absolutely necessary).

I think the only market for 950W PSUs, now or in two or in five years, will be system-builder-guru-wannabes, eager to throw around their ignorance and income. In maybe 2 out of a hundred million cases, some enthusiast might want to cool their dual opteron rig with dual 160w peltiers without a seperate PSU, and good for them. They will be gods among ants in the anandtechs and xtremesystems and [your favorite motherboard manufacturer] forums of the world, and every script-kiddie-turned-MCSE with a job and a forum account will want one, too.

But then, maybe I'm just having an episode of cynicism. ;)
