Evidently, he never saw the movie Armageddon. While not enclosed as tightly as in your hand ("Your wife will be opening your ketchup bottles for the rest of your life"), it's still enclosing it in a small space.

Hell, I remember, as a kid, seeing a beer bottle practically vaporized by 3 Black Cat firecrackers, all lit and dropped inside the bottle at once. Wasn't too much to see, after they all went off together!

As far as I am aware, firecrackers are illegal in the UK, and not available (obviously). So it was probably an illegal "firecracker".
Since we don't have them in the UK, not knowing what they are, or what they do, is fairly reasonable.

On the other hand, it is crazy to put any kind of firework into your pocket and light it.

Illegal

Wiki illegal firecrackers

Banned fireworks[edit]
Mortar Shells: all fireworks of the "aerial shell"/"mortar shell" type, which launch single, large projectiles into the air where they explode to create effects - are Category 4. This was as a result of the deaths in 1996 of Stephen Timcke and David Hattersley who were killed by mortars on successive nights.[7]
Mini-rockets, bangers, firecrackers, fireworks of erratic flight (including jumping fireworks) were banned in 1997.[2]
In 2004 the definition of mini-rocket was further restricted, and airbombs were also banned, in an effort to stop anti-social behaviour involving fireworks.[8]
