Alright. Accoring to a recent poll, 25% of you Hardware Forum Visitors are not cracking RC5. Well, you should be. It uses spare CPU power. You don't notice any any any any difference at all (my comp sped up but thats just weird). It is totally fun to do. You get like addicted to stats and even though my computer is producing horribly, I am still having a great time doing it. It is really so much fun. The DC Forum is made up of a great bunch of people. It is now also easier than ever to get started with Russ's preconfigured client (We Love You Russ) ...

Oh ya, and you will be also giving back to Anand and the rest of the staff who provide this great hardware site to us and an amazing bbs.

So go on over to the Distributed Computing Forum and post "Help! I want to start RC5 but I have no clue what to do" and like lots of people will come to help..

Come on people /. is right ahead of us and DPC is on our tails. Get crackin!

And quit whining that your CPU will loase life if it runs RC5, thats all bull,

the contest has been going nearly 1100 days now (how many years is that?), and there are people who have been running CPU's 24/7 since the day is started

Have a CPU based off the Athlon core? It cracks RC5 great! Durons crack RC5 clock for clock JUST as fast as an Athlon Classic or Thunderbird. That's what's great about it.

Even better, if you're cracking RC5 now get your friends on it too! Before we know it we'll be beating the DPCs in the daily stats (right now we're in 2nd in the daily stats).

I'm cracking RC5 right now but my computer DID slow down when I started using it. When ever I go to shut down or restart it takes about 15-20 seconds to shut down Windows. This is really annoying. Anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks. :)

Rc5 is meant for 24 / 7 use but if your not going to use it 24/7 go to the RC5 client and Pause it, Shutdown Rc5 then shutdown windows.

Are you using the newest version of the client? I remember there was a bug a while back in one of the older versions that caused the client to take an abnomally long time to shut down. Try getting the newest version of the client.

Well then, I guess my eyes were playing tricks on me. I have noticed that some programs do slow down significantly when you are running RC5 in the background. Though it did not stop me. I would recommend if you see any performance drop in programs that you have it pause itself when that program is run. But, please don't stop cracking.

Klosters,

RC5-56 was cracked, but I think that's been a couple years ago. We're working on RC5-64.

RC5... hehehe. You're ALL "Cracked" (up)

We had a temp techy come in about a year ago and installed that on about 30 computers... he's gone now, and so is the RC5 clients.. ;) (no, he's not gone 'cause of RC5! lol, he just finished his work)

I've seen people get obsessed with some funny stuff, but this takes the cake in my opinion.

Im completely new to this. I would be interested if I had a clue to whats going on. What is everyone trying to accomplish, and how does it work? Thanks.

See here and here for more info.

you can also go to the Distributed Computing Forum and ask as many questions as you want. They are really helpful there.

AFAIK, the only performance issue I've seen with the client is when I am burning CD's. I've had a couple BU's when I've forgotten to shut down the client. I benchmark games with this thing on, no difference. The client is set up to be nice with processes.

Cracking is fun. It's interesting to watch your stats rise, while you figure out how to get more PC's cracking for you (this process being refered to as "assimilation" :) )

jinsonxu I know right? I wake up in the morning ... take a shower so I can see through both eyes, put on my boxers and then go to IE and see how much I crakced overnight. It is frickin addicitng!!!!! AH!!!!!!!

P.S. - For people who don;t have a clue what we are talking about, go to the Distributed Computing Forum. I didn;t know sh|t about Rc5 and that until I went there asked like zillions of questions and now I'm the recruiter, not the recruitee.

Rc5 is awesome people.

heh, great job guys!

if you are like me, you'd hate it when people refer you to other links or other people.

it doesn't have to be that way, you can all just tell them already..

RC5-64 is a test, to show that it IS possible to break 64 bit encryption, and thereby force more people to use 128 bit encryption.

we are the people who help the program out. all we do is lend them CPU cycles that are unused (when you're typing, surfing, or away from the computer for example) and they go towards cracking parts of the code.

of course, that's not what drives us. what REALLY drives us, is the competition between teams for good stats. it really is addicting.

for those who are scared of feeling a slowdown, don't, becuase normally you won't (games won't be affected). I haven't noticed ANY difference. I'm running a K6-2 400@420 (RC5 was one of my reasons to overclock) with 96 megs SDRAM, Voodoo 3 2000 etc..

I've never gotten Buffer underruns because of RC5 (all of them were my fault, and that was ALOT of wasted CDs. I kick myself every time that happens...).

what you do to join, is you download this tiny program, which you then install on your computer, and configure it so it runs RC5.

the program downloads packets (the amount it downloads is configurable) from the internet to chew on, and then chews on them, until it is out, at which point it connects to the server to get more. I have mine set to download 2 days worth of packets, so I don't have to be connected much at all (I am connected often though).

:Q

I've stopped showering first, time for that after my statfest. I'll start worrying when I begin to skip showers altogether. :disgust:

jblondi--please come see us in the DC Forum. Perhaps RC5 it is not for everyone, but we need everyone's help that is willing. If you don't like it, you can always stop. You'll never know if you're missing something that you'd find entertaining unless you try it first. There's some friendly competition among various mini-teams (complete with Star Trek themes), individual performance, mutual help, a little humor and smack talking, and the reward of giving back to the AnandTech community.

I'd be cool if everyone could sign up! I started cracking for TA 3 days ago - no hitches, and no slowdowns. :D

Remember, TA does more than RC5. Go to the DC forum and find out about ALL the great teams we have!!!
