Why you buy motor oil, why do they sell them in cases of 6 quarts when your engine takes < 5 quarts?

Because some cars and trucks take 6 quarts. Two of my vehicles take 6.

So next time buy a gallon jug, add the spare quart from the time before, and you're golden!

Stores here sell it in 5 quarts, my engine only takes 3.8 according to the manual. I just buy 4 separate bottles, that way i know when its full. I would buy the 5 quart if they had a see through side that way i could see how much is left.

if your car uses 5 quarts, buy a case w/ 6 quarts. use 5 and save the last quart. do the same thing next 4 times. for the 6th time, you have free ;) oil left.

Cases of oil are 6 quarts now?

Maybe it's because I'm not buying synthetic, but when I buy a case of oil, it has 12 quarts in it.

My Envoy takes 7.

It's the "10 Hot Dogs in a pack and 8 Buns" conundrum.

How about you keep a 1 quart bottle, and next time you fill it up leaving 4 quarts in the 5 quart bottle.

My 951 (2.5 litre 4-cylinder) takes just over 6 quarts, and the 2.3 litre 5-cylinder in my S70 takes over 7 quarts.

My supra takes 5, so every sixth change is "free" :)

I'm surprised that the turbo doesn't burn oil and the rings haven't gone at my mileage, but eventually I'll use that 6th quart to top off between changes.

Just save the extra for next time? It's been in the earth for millions of years, I think it will last just fine on a shelf for a few months.
