Why would you name your son a sexually suggestive name?

My first name is 'BJ'. Thanks Mom and Dad!

I've had the scorn of that name since about the 6th grade when I found out what a "BJ" was. I got in fights with kids about it until about 8th grade when I realized it might be alright. Sure, I get the laughs or the smirks when I introduce myself to people a lot of the time, but I can see how funny it is.

When I was in college, one of the girl's I was dating was in a sorority. Some of her sorority girls called on the phone and yelled, "Does BJ need a BJ?" lol. I was a bit red-faced.

It was most embarrassing in college during the first day of class and 'role call'.

My current girlfriend's sister laughed her ass off when she heard my name at the family dinner table.

Anyways, I don't feel sorry for any son named after what is supposedly a 'girls name'.

EDIT: This is NOT a paraody. Thus the reference

I've never seen anyone named BJ. Normally, they have a first name that starts with B and a middle/last name that starts with J. Then everyone calls them BJ and no one has a clue what the real first name is.

Usually, girls have been named BJ or used that initials reference. Why? It's mainly suppose to stand for BIG JUGGS, not blowjob. That's where it sprouted from in terms of a sexual overtone. Especially since blowjob is one word not two.

Also, bear in mind, many names just get associated with stuff over years. Like Dick wasn't normally associated with a sexual connotation and later to become synonomous (sp?). Go back to old England, there were tons of "name games" for people to play. Hey, if you don't have alot of money, a TV or anything else for recreation guess what forms of amusement you come up with? Anyhow, one popular game is to take a multi-syllable name, shorten it and then rhyme it with an inanimate object. This is why Robert became Bob. This is why William became Bill. This is why Richard became Dick. Which at the time refered to a horse swatch. Hence the term dick whipped. Which later took on a sexual connotation. blah blah blah. I know this because I have 3 older family members named Dick.

Your parents may have been "niave" enough not to realize what the connotations for your name was frm, but really, kids and adults can make fun of just about any name and they will if they want to.

Nope, I've never heard of him. I've never seen the Bulls play a game - on TV or in person. So I looked it up. Is this the full name: Benjamin Roy Armstrong Jr.? At least that is what a google search gave me. If that is the full name then again, he is not named BJ Roy Armstrong Jr. He is named Benjamin. I could see BJ come from B en j amin. Or maybe it came from B enjamin J unior.

BJ Surhoff ..... I think he's still with the Orioles. Anyhoo, we have a BJ in our family's acquaintance, and some just refer to him as Ben, or Benjamin. My daughter's (21 months old) current fascination is with this huge purple dinosaur and his sidekick BJ and Baby Bop .. LoL

You should just take it in stride. When they laugh, laugh with them. Confidence is key.
