Why would you name your son a girl's name?

A coworker of mine's first name is Kelly. Someone just came around looking for "Mrs. XYZ" (no need to use his real last name). Names like Francis, Pat, or Jamie are pretty commonly accepted as genderless. But what possesses a parent to name their child something like Kelly? I guess to honor some dead relative or something, but is that really worth putting your kid through the unavoidable teasing? I just don't understand some people's motivations.

Kelly, Pat, Kim, Jamie, etc. all need to be exclusively female in my opinion. No reason to torture your newborn boy for life with a name like those. Heck, it is probably best not to even name a girl one of those just to avoid problems in life.

when i started my current company, another person named kelly started with me. i always thought the person was a she until a new hire notice was sent out and it kept saying "he"

so yeah i guess guys use it. if my parents named me kelly i'd just change it to Kelsey or Kelso or Keller or Kelloggs. rather be a cereal than to be mistaken for a chick

Francis is a girls name? Never heard of that before.

You think Kelly was made fun of in as a child, try being Dick Butkiss (spelling?) of the Chicago Bears

Was/is not a problem for me. Giving a kid a really off-the-wall name for the sake of being original is a bit cruel, but Kelly has been a man's name for centuries.

I used to room w/ a guy named Stacy. He married a girl named Kelly. They look like a lesbian couple when you read their names together. :)

If you give your son a 'feminine' name you'll guarantee that he'll be rich and famous (1 out of 2 isn't bad). Examples: Ashlie Lelie (WR - Denver Broncos), Kelly Holcomb (QB - Not sure where, Browns?), Jamie Barber (Actor, Battlestar Galactica - Lee "Apollo" Adama).

I didn't say anything about Patrick. That is a completely different name.

I think of Pat as primarily a boy's name. Kim is an Asian name. :) And Jamie, I think it's understood that it could be either. Like Aaron/Erin. Hmmm, Kelly, Aaron/Erin, Patrick, all seem to be of Irish decent... Conspiracy? :Q

I knew a guy named Jamie. Nobody really cared though. Carly Fiorina is named Carleton, I believe. WTF is that.
