so, I'm watching a tv series from 1972 tonight... there's a scene where this guy is choking, and in order to save him, a doctor gives him a piece of bread. :hmm:

wtf?

this was pre-Heimlich maneuver, but bread?

I vaguely remember using that technique to clear a Doritos-stabbed throat when I was ~10. The sponginess of bread is what makes it effective.

quick google says it can be used like that, to clear something stuck in your throat. but if you're choking, I can't imagine it would be a good idea

Maybe your esophagus but not your "throat." The last thing you want to do is cram more stuff on top of a partially blocked airway. If the object is a ways below the epiglottis then maybe, otherwise you are probably doing more harm than good.

Last week I was eating some Teriyaki chicken and rice from Yoshinoya. I got some stuck in my throat. I could breath, so not life threatening, but man did it hurt. I tried to wash it down with water but that just hurt more. I ended up hurling a few times, my eyes were watering, it was just nuts. Eventually it went down, but I think it took about 8 minutes or so.
