I have the MSI Pro 2A MB with Win98 first edition and the default MS Via busmaster drivers installed. I have dsl that I was using a USB modem from Sprint that caused periodic problems. I had Sprint send me an ethernet modem to exchange out the USB. After installing a cheap NIC and hooking up the new modem (without installing new drivers) I'm getting increases in my memory scores by about 50 points in Sandra and my hd benchmarks in Sandra and HD Tach have also greatly increased, with a substantial decrease in cpu usage - to almost nothing more than .7%. Needless to say, I'm much more stable online. Are USB modems really that much of a hinderence on a system?
