Why would someone need more than a 2.1 megapixel camera for HD video recording?

1,920 x 1,080 = 2,073,600 ~ 2.1 million

When displaying on an HD display, there will only be 2.1 million pixels available so the extra pixel information will have to be merged/consolidated to scale to the display resolution anyways, right?

On the Panasonic GH4, it does 4K video. But if you scale the 4K back to 1080p, you get better sharpness and color fidelity. You also reduce the noise in the photo by taking this route. The GH4 is the best money I've spent in a long time.

Um, please explain how added pixels increase sharpness and color rendition.

What @Kaido said sums it up. It's a tad complex, so just trust us on this.

Plus it just looks pimp in terms of PQ

I primarily shoot video on my iPhone (despite having a T2i with a variety of cool lenses); I've considered getting a 4K phone & then downsampling since I really enjoy shooting on a mobile platform (as weird as that sounds), but then I think about getting a GH4 or a Blackmagic & go "meh" haha.

btw my buddy has been shooting on a 2.5K BM since they came out and BOY does that thing look good! Very filmic right OOTB. I hesitate to say it, but I think I like the raw footage better than I like RED's footage (I'm a huge RED fan). Although that Sony F65 did look marvelous in Oblivion :hmm:
