why would someone insist on paying rent in cash?

I'm looking for a roommate and one prospective person, she says she has to pay rent in cash. What do people try to hide with this?

 
Good question, I'd assume they're just paranoid.

Still, paying in cash is good for the person accepting the money as well, since you know the check won't bounce. Personally I like cash, cashier's check, and plastic, I don't like checks much.

Well, there's nothing inherently wrong with cash, it just sets off all kinds of flags in mind about trying to hide something.

edit--or she's destined to become the leader of the human resistance against the machines in the near future and has to stay "off the grid" to prevent detection and termination.
 
i only take cheques when i know the person's good for it, and even then, i prefer it to be from the same branch as mine, so they don't give me the Hold BS policy
 
maybe she doesnt have a checking account. i would think about red flags too. watch out! should could leave you without a trace!

Maybe that's why she does it...it sets off some quasi-sexual "bad girl" feeling to pay in cash. Hey, she's got to get her kicks somewhere.
 
Most prefer cash but its suspicious since she's making an issue out of it. She could be dealing, but you got to do your research on her so she doesn't hijack everything you own and takeoff.

some people dont have checks.. and cash is a legal tender. take it dont complain i say. worst part is getting a rommate that wont pay.

im gonna stop now before i make a rant thread of non paying roommates.

Well besides my clothes, computer, desk and bed I don't plan on having much stuff. Even my computer is a POS these days, heavy and not worth much. Car is the only thing of value, but it's fully insured. So unless she decides to steal my organs or something.

 
Plenty of possible reasons. The most obvious -- besides she's a terrorist-hooker -- is that she recently declared bankruptcy. (within the past 7 years I think) With bankruptcy on her record it could very well be impossible for her to get an account with a bank or a credit card.

LOL, terrorist hooker, that would suck. :Q The demographic doesn't match though. It's just a strange stipulation, I mean anyone with fricken pulse can walk down to wamu and get a free checking account. Dunno, I will ask her about this.

I always pay stuff in cash when possible. Too lazy to write cheques when I have cash.
