Why Would My Router/Modem Prevent Me From Connecting to ONE Web Page???

rpr

Senior member
I have been using my current modem and wireless router for over 2 years with absolutely no problems. Over the past two weeks, I have been unable to connect to one web page (Microsoft Live cash back). I thought it was a problem with the page, but today I tried to troubleshoot it.

Long story short, after trying everything (disabling all anti-virus, firewalls, pinging the site through Embarq's servers, etc), I connected to a neighbor's wireless network and I connected fine to the web page.

So the problem is either with my modem or my wireless router. Why would a router and/or modem block me from one single web site and work perfectly fine otherwise???

It could be a problem with your ISPs connection or the DNS server you are using as well.

When you are not able to connect to the site, what EXACTLY is happening?

The connection times out and I get the IE message "Internet Explorer can not open the web page".

Since I am able to access all other internet sites, and I was able to ping the site through my ISP's servers using a command line through Start/Run/CMD, I was thinking it couldn't be a problem with my ISP's connection???

Can you clarify the DNS server possibility?

Here's the output:

So in summary, the request times out when I try to ping the website. However, the command that my ISP (Embarq) had me run was for an ISP address that they told me was the same as the website (96.6.68.195), and that works.

More confused than ever. Did my ISP give me bad info?

Didn't see Embarq listed on the list of ISP's that have problems. Try using OpenDNS' servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. It's a DNS issue with certain ISP's.

The page that you are trying is https make sure that your browser or what ever else involved the process it set to work with https.

I access other https sites without any problems.

Regarding the 3D Traceout program, I don't think I would even know where to begin. Which function would I use in that program???

And forgive me, but how do I go about using the open DNS servers??? Sorry, I'm not all that good with networking issues.

You can either change it in your computer's ip settings or on the router. I would just test it out on the computer first. Go to your ip porperties and just change the setting to "Use the following DNS server addresses:" then enter those 2 ip addresses.

Im having the same problem, but when I ping this is my results:
"Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]

C:\Users\Jason>ping http://worldoftanks.com/

I have accessed this site many times before today and my friends can access it from their computers, I can not access it from any of the 3 computers I have here. sounds like its my router but bright house has it password protected so I can not access the router directly. this is a gaming site and I am not even able to use the "updater" for the game. I am un able to access anything to do with the key words "worldoftanks.com" I can access the sister site worldofwarplanes.com and worldofwarships.com, they are all ran by wargamming.com

I doubt it's on your end. I can't connect to it either, yet http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com says it's up.

Works for me too.

Im having the same problem, but when I ping this is my results:

Ok for one thing, don't ping the entire web address like you are. "ping http://worldoftanks.com/" will NOT work. Try this instead "ping worldoftanks.com"

Secondly - what is the full web address of the site your trying to get to? Post it and myself or someone else can give the proper ping or trace route command to get there. Also, have you tried accessing this on any other computer? Or another browser besides IE?
