Why would Muslim leaders in US decline helping us?

Here's a quote from MSNBC

<< In Washington, agents contacted Muslim leaders asking for help. Stanley Cohen, an attorney, told the Associated Press that at least three of his clients received contacts from the FBI ?asking for help gathering intelligence on the Muslim community.? Cohen said his clients declined.
>>

If these Muslim leaders really are against such horrible acts, why won't they help us try to apprehend the people responsible?

If you went and asked a catholic priest to turn in people he thought might have commited crimes do you think he would agree? You can't ask priest/clerics whatever to turn people in, doesn't happen except where they KNOW someone did something. Asking a priest to spy on his flock for the government would be front page news on invasion of privacy.

Wrong. A Catholic priest would most certainly turn in a terrorist, provide info, etc., if he had such information. The exception to this is if he obtained the info from Confession, and I highly doubt the types we are talking about would be giving Confession in the first place.

I don't think the muslim community really trust the US government. They see the US government as a big supporter of Israel and against the Palestinians. The FBI needs to work with the muslims. How? I don't know.

I have seen articles which spoke of many Muslims doing exactly that. Volenteering Arabic translation and info gathering. Seems that the entire "mainstream" Muslim population world wide should be doing everything in their power to put a stop to the terrorist movement embedded in their ranks. Will they?

I don't think anyone's attitude towards the police is determined by religion, but rather by character. I bet there are tons of priests who know about beatings on the significant other, but who also don't say a thing, and probably advise to not do anything either.

I think Rahvin's got it right. If it is known that Priests(or whatever Islamic religious leaders are called) are spying for the government, it will not only affect the Terrorists, but the average law abiding Muslim will also lose respect for the clerics.

Uh, they asked Muslim "leaders". Why does everybody assume they are priests, imams, or clerics? And if they are not priests may they rot in hell.
