Poppers wouldnt do that, nor would lacerations to the face.
Is that something they explained better in the book?

He hung himself which I imagine could have caused his paralysis. He also cut off his own face with a knife.

In actuality, I was going to say the hanging. Not even saying he had a neck break, but just the hypoxia.

It is not popular in movies where people magically bounce right back once 2-3 seconds worth of CPR are sort of performed, but brain damage starts with in the first 10 minutes of no oxygen.
Brain damage very often comes as paralysis.
