Why would I get 1.8 Mbps via wireless and only 1 Mbps wired?

I'm playing around with the wireless part of my SMC router and a Linksys WUSB11 client. I get 1800 kbps on dslreports test site for the wireless set up, but only get 1000 kbps for my work computer upstairs that is connected to the cable modem via a 5 ft store bought CAT5 cable.

I'd be looking REAL CLOSE at what's running on the wired computer, it seems clear that you have something that is seriously impacting your bandwidth, probably spyware/malware.

I have spybot and adaware, so I'm pretty sure that I don't have a spyware problem. Could it be that I'm using Windows 98SE on the "slow" wired machine and Windows XP on the wireless machine? I ran the tweak test at DSLreports and it said to change my RWIN setting between 10220 and 26280. It said that my Windows 98 default was 8760. Could this make that big of difference? I haven't gone in and tried to tweak anything yet. Otherwise, the test said that my connection looked good.

Believe it not, the RWIN can make a airly big difference on a Java based browser test.

Would it make any real world difference though?

About changing the RWIN settings. I'm a little foggy on this and don't want to screw anything up. Can anyone give me a digest version of how to change this and how to change it? Is it even worth changing?

Thanks again,

On broadband connections it makes a HUGE difference as instead of taking 10 minutes to download a file it will only take 2 minutes. you can make is progressively bigger until you find a size the suits your connection. I don't think win98 can go bigger than 65000 so try 32000 and 64000. Or even better upgrade the machine to winXP as it has a much better implementation of IP.

hope this helps.

The tweak utility said to use a setting between 10220 and 26280. How will I know if the number is too large?

I use an abscenely high 256560 (have 9+mb OOL cable). The reco for the tweak for mine is 64xxx, but I notice a difference and since I can finish a 64mb DL from OOl's ftp at 900+KB (yes BYTES not bits) in the last 5% of the test, I am happy :)
