It seems to me that he did in fact see an ad on the google home page when he went to it. Put a cock or something in your mouth Anubis.. anything to keep it shut.

Normally I don't agree with or condone a reaction like Anubis, but as you can clearly see from the people who posted before him, its obvious no one had any clue what was going on and the OP just assumed that the world revolved around him and was doing nothing to enlighten us as to what was going on.

If you want to know why its aggravating, you should have to put up with people who assume that everyone is experiencing the same problems they are. It must be at least once a day anymore that someone goes: "WTF, Google is down?", to which pretty much everyone else replies: "No, its working, it must be you", and yet the person still can't figure out that it must just be on their end that there is a problem since it is working for just about everyone else. The chances of Google actually being down is pretty slim, but in the rare event that there is something with Google (typically just a festive change to their logo for a holiday or something) that everyone is privy to, chances are that you're just being stupid since just about everyone will have figured out what was going on. I mean, you're halfway done with "googling" it to find out what is going on since you're on the page, yet, instead you go out of your way to go to a website and ask them what is going on. Now, imagine putting up with this on a regular basis (anyone who has ever done tech support or IT work definitely has, which you might guess plenty of people on here have). Do you think that it just might get a little bit annoying?

You sir, are an idiot. By the way, your multiple profanity laced all caps posts are twice as annoying at the OP's posts. See a therapist, have a drink, smoke some weed or do whatever it takes for you to calm down the voices in your head.

It's Google's website...they own it, they can do whatever they want with it...

Since they're in the Bay area, it's not out of the normal for them to go with the local trends on something like this.

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002

That was relevant in 2002, but now everyone uses LCDs

1) Change your homepage. If you're using Google as your homepage, it belongs to them, not you, so they can do whatever the hell they want with it.

2) How is Google's darkening of their home page in support of the Lights Out campaign considered advertising?

Well it is in support of a cause. I'm not saying I am for or against the cause. I'm just wondering if people think it's a good idea. When things like this start they have a tendency to take off like a rocket. I can envision this taken to the extreme when google is taking money of for all sorts of companies for all sorts of "causes". Don't get me wrong I love google and what it stands for as a business. When i see something like this however I can't help but think of advertising and how it's always taken to extremes and this is borderline advertising.

Yeah. Little different. Their advertising to date has been suburb in that it is non-intrusive yet still very effective. I wish more business would follow their model. This however strays a little from their current advertising.
