why would geeks.com sell this?

FoBoT

No Lifer
i bought a DVD remote for xbox, i don't know crap about xbox, here is the listing at geeks.com

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=XB-DVDREMOTE&cat=CON

you can see it doesn't say anything about region or any warning like "hey if you are an xbox n00b, this might not let you play your american DVd's"

so i buy this and plug it up, i tried one dvd immdiately, i thought it worked, i only tried it like 5 seconds then didn't mess with it for a few days. now every disk i try says some crap about region something and it won't play the DVD

so i search google before i post this and find this MS KB article

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;817041

Region numbers are displayed on both the DVD disc and the DVD Movie Playback Kit. The regions are:
? Region 1 - U.S.A, U.S. territories and Canada (Part Number X08-25387)
? Region 2 - Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa and Greenland (Part Number X08-25402)
? Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hong Kong (Part Number X08-96288-XXX)
In this example, XXX is the specific part number of the DVD dongle/receiver. For more information, see the note after this list.
? Region 4 - Colombia, Mexico, South & Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and Caribbean (Part Number X08-25597)
so i have my daughter read me the code on the DVD dongle/receiver, the one geeks.com sold me says X08-25597 , so that means my xbox is now coded to only play region 4 DVD's ? 😕
i assume all my DVD (i bought from walmart and costco etc) are region 1 :Q

the article says i have to get it "Repaired" to reset it and then i guess i would have to buy another DVD dongle/remote from somewhere else?

i am dumb, but geeks.com should have some disclaimer that their super cheap $8.00 version will screw me over

i don't want to get into my other options here , but i assume there are some other ways that non-n00bs handle this, which is probably why real geeks buy this super cheap thing from geeks.com

oh well

Have you called geeks.com?

I would most certainly bitch, nowhere do they give anything to indicate it's not region 1 (which would be the logical assumption).

Um, I'm confused about your whole post. Have you tried a normal Microsoft brand DVD player pack? It's about $30. I don't see why that thing would "set" your XBox to region 4 only though

That IS a normal Microsoft brand DVD playback kit. It's just for Region 4.

the KB article says that once you plug the dongle/remote into the xbox, it sets the region setting and you can't use a different dongle unless you reset it. i didn't copy/paste the whole KB article into my post

Which DVD kit should I purchase?
Purchase the Xbox Console and DVD Movie Playback Kit that matches the region in which you are located. After you buy your DVD Playback kit and use it with your Xbox console, your console is permanently coded to whichever region appears on the outside the DVD Movie Playback Kit packaging. You cannot play DVDs from another region on that console (except for DVDs without regional coding) even if you later try to use a DVD Movie Playback Kit from another region on that console. For example, if you have purchased a Region 1 DVD Movie Playback Kit and now want to watch a Region 4 DVD, you cannot do so with your Xbox console.

Changing regions
To change the DVD region on your Xbox console:
1. Send in your Xbox console for repair to have it re-adjusted to play DVDs from the region that you want.

You must pay for a repair in this instance, regardless of warranty status.
2. Purchase a DVD Movie Playback Kit sold for this region to use after your Xbox console is repaired. After you do this, you can only play DVDs from this region from that point forward. It is a permanent change.

hmm... thats strange, i always thought region was defined by the atapi device... would the remote really set the xbox to only region 4?

that is what the KB article says and that seems to be what has happened

i sorta thought people would be replying with stuff like "duh, everybody knows that"

Well I suppose it could be argued that you should have read the packaging first but I sure as hell didn't when I bought my DVD kit.

There is absolutely no reason to be selling Region 4 stuff in the US, you shouldn't HAVE to check.

No it isn't, that's generic for sure. MS kits are way more expensive...though the remotes and dongles look very similar. The packaging is the big tip-off.

First, region packaging may vary.

Second, he read the part number off of the dongle.

So either it's an outright forgery, or it's real.

If it were a forgery (and I wouldn't put it past someone to do it) why would they bother making it region specific?

I know geeks says it's generic, but the part number is correct for a MSFT region 4 kit.

Regardless, it's a minor point. Real or not it functioned exactly like it was supposed to. Geeks shouldn't be selling Region 4 stuff.

Go to Best Buy or any place that sells Xbox stuff and pick up the regular MS DVD remote and plug that in, unplug the POS geeks.com one, and see if you can play your regular DVDs.

 M4H

it isn't a huge deal, i do have DVD players

i looked for a non region 1 DVD to try, i found one that isn't marked, "Care Bears #105", it plays fine
my daughter also told me that our Tarzan DVD plays on it, the back of the DVD package has a little round picture thingy that has a "1" in it. i saw in NFS4's post about his DVD cataloging that some of his DVD's list multiple regions, like 1-4 , so maybe the tarzan one is multi region or something

*edit* i tried Tarzan and it works. the Incredibles doesn't work. i dunno
*edit**edit* i tried some more old disney dvd's and they all work. it appears that just newer region 1 dvd don't work 😕
