Why would asus design a mobo like this(P6X58D-E)?

I am aware i should have done more reasearch so dont take this as a i hate asus oh my god the world is ending and its asus fault thread.

Simple question, i think its because the board designer was drunk or high but lets see if you guys come up with a better answer.

ATX specs have 7 expansion slots. Motherboard has 6 expansion slots. Its a TRI SLI/CF board. Why the hell did the leave the extra slot AT THE TOP serving no purpose whatsoever when they could have left it at the bottom, allowing for a double slot GPU to be used in the bottom PCIe slot without a EATX 8 slot case needed?

Thought of another way to describe this:

x = used z = not used

current mobo layout expansion slots

<--- bottom Top --->

[x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [z]

what layout should be

[z] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x] [x]

That would allow dual slot card in the bottom slot without having to use a EATX case.

Won't that bottom slot still take a dual slot card, with the extra width hanging over the header sockets (and you just need to be careful about cable routing, if you use them)?

It's to get you to upgrade to a newer case. They mobo and case makers are in cahoots, obviously.

It's the same reason why for a long time you could only buy hot dog buns in packages of 8, whereas hot dogs themselves came in packages of 10. Made you buy two whole packs of buns just to get the two extra buns you really needed. :)

Of course, if my PSU wasnt going to be in the way, which it is. And almost always will be in most ATX cases.

yeah i know, im considering the Corsair 600T or coolermaster HAF X now. I need better cable management than the Antec 300 anyways.

I have a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P and I have a PCI-ex slot in the same spot that I use for my Hauppauge HVR-2250 cable tuner. If it wasnt for a slot out of the way at the top, I could not fit it between my graphics cards.
You could also put a sound card there, or if you needed an externel SATA expansion card. Don't get me wrong, I feel for your pain, but the way ASUS sees it, most users dont actually run multi GPU configurations.

@Throckmorton
The tab slides into the PCI-Ex slot, and the metal bracket fits in the back of case like any other card.

I like your K&N link by the way, makes me wonder why I have one on my S60. I have a 1959 Triumph T120 and when they were made they had no ait filters stock, just velocity tubes! Talk about a dirt sucker!

Looks like im going to be going with the Corsair 600T case. And i will mod it to add a side fan to cool the vid cards. This should solve my cooling issues :)
