Does your friend have a family? I don't think there is a ton of government help available for single people. I could be wrong, never having had the misfortune to be that desperate, at least not since I quit bumming around on boats and living in my car and stuff like that. But I was a kid then.

Enough is relative.

For example,

A mid level network engineer in my area SHOULD make $65-70k per year plus benefits. Unfortunately there are not a lot of networking positions in this area, so if your only skills are networking and you are unable to move (you bought a house in this area 5-7 years ago) then you might have to take a position at a smaller company for $45-55k plus benefits. You are being underpaid, but it's better than living on welfare by far. Then you bitch and moan about it until a larger house has a position and you jump.

Doesn't make sense or apply to everyone. If your friend has student loans, a car bill, government welfare isn't going to give you enough. In some areas like mine it takes forever to even get a third of what would be my paycheck. He may get enough to pay his rent if possible but that may not be enough for all the bills.

Taking a job with less money is fine as long as it gives you enough to take care of finances. Meanwhile he should be looking elsewhere while he has a job.
