Why would anyone hack a forum for sick people?

I lurk reguarly on an arthritis forum (yes, I have arthritis - no, you don't have to be 100+ years old to have it.)

Some Turkish punks hacked this board full of semi-computer literate sick people. Just plain stupid. :| Text

because it's easy, people don't care what the site is or who posts there, it's an easy target and will get taken down.

such is the mentality of the script kiddiot

Because it had an easily exploitable security flaw, and therefore made an easy target. The Turks that hacked it may not have even been able to read the content (which I assume was in English) and figure out what the content of the site was.

These people are interested in getting thier names out any way they can.

I don't really have much to do with the forum, and I really can't help, but it's been weeks now and they haven't been able to get back up and running. It sucks. It's the only place some of these people have to go for any understanding of the pain they deal with every day. Nobody else wants to hear about the trouble they have opening jars or going down stairs... the internet is the only place where they've really got community and sympathy, something you can sorely need when you've got a disease like this.

Why do little arrogant punks feel like they've pulled off something great by exploiting vulnerabilities on sites that are run by people who can barely turn their computers on in the first place?

You're making the mistake of bringing the subject of the board into question. It could be basket-weaving to cancer, it doesn't matter they don't care either way what it is. Don't think of it in terms of the visitors and chalk it up to using sh!tty software, better luck next time.

I bet they had no idea what they hacked.

Does anybody write Turkish enough to email them and tell them how frigging stupid they were to take out a site like that? :| Not like they'd care in a million years, but at least to take the wind out of their sails for thinking they did something so incredible?

As cited before, bunch of barely-literate computer adults. They're not going to know the first place to start to build a secure site.

One month later and they haven't even fixed their links. They thought they were the bees' knees when they "upgraded" to phpBB 2.0. Not an ice cube's chance in hell they had stuff backed up.
