why would anyone get rid of a new car after just 1 year?

I saw a 2002 prizm at a toyota dealer and it was 12.5K miles and they were asking 11.5K for it. This is what I used to drive until it was wrecked about a week ago and I wouldn't mind another. Why would anyone buy a new car and then get rid of it after just a year?

Might have lost it in a repo and a dealer picked it up at auction.

Besides, it could be 2 years old. New models come out in the fall...sometimes earlier.

They could have been relocated to a place where it was not feasible to bring the car with them.

go check it out, get the vin and look it up. if it says it was totalled or something stay away. but it could be a good deal if everything checks out alright.

It's a good thing my mom has an '89 then. It'd suck if her car were rotting away.

Maybe they needed the money.

Uhh... at only 12.5k miles, the car is barely broken in. I'm at almost 8,500 on my not quite 6 month old WRX, and the car is just starting to loosen up a little and feel broken in.

its a prism, not exactly a car waiting to be opened up. Maybe the person got a raise, an inheritance, or decided not to drive a boring car?

Think it's been covered, I go with the lease factor. Someone may have 1yr or 2yr leased it and traded it in because they wanted something nicer / got a better deal / better job, etc.

But it could be because it was a lemon / or totaled / etc. If it was in an accident I'd skip it, if it was a lemon--I'd consider it, as you still have some bump.to.bump warranty to get that stuff corrected.

Possible reasons:
1) They like to trade in their car every year and prefer a new low end car instead of a semi-used nicer one.
2) They are too poor to afford payments on it.
3) They decided it was just not good enough for them and they bought upscale.
4) They moved away from the US.
