Why would anyone check the "copy protect" box in WMP 9?

Ok, it is there and checked by default, but it is a simple matter to uncheck it.

Once unchecked, it stays unchecked...

What advantage is there to leaving the box checked and messing with copy protection?

In practicality, leaving the box checked will cause all WMAs that you rip from CDs in Windows Media Player to be tied to that particular computer and OS installation that said WMAs were ripped on. It is a royal pain in the ass that I discovered by accident back in the WMP7 days.

Nevertheless, if you're ripping CDs in Windows Media Player, to WMA format, you have serious issues. You should be using Exact Audio Copy instead, and encoding with LAME.

I discovered it back in those days too, had to rerip all my CDs.

This past week I just re-riped all my CDs using the newer format and VBR which improved the quality while reducing file size. The quality is now so good (average 128kbps VBR mode) that I can't see myself re-ripping them again.

Bahh, too much trouble... WMP 9 works just fine, the quality is just fine, the speed is just fine, I like the player, etc...

I usually just use winamp to rip my cd's.
