why would a slave hard drive prevent you from booting into windows?

Trying to recover data for a friend. I threw the laptop hard drive in my case with the adapter as a secondary master. When its attached, the bios recognizes it on boot and windows boots off my primary master. The winxp screen with the blue bar goes and then my screen goes black. It wont let me get into windows to save the data at all. when i unplug the drive then I can get into windows....

anyone ever hear of this?

the hard drive is on its last legs and starting to make a grinding noise.

I have to agree with Nik - your second post obviously out of place 😛

Did you change the jumpers? And have you tried setting it as a secondary master/slave as opposed to on the primary?

I have the same problem on my computer but it is with 3.5 HD.

It doesn't boot because the HD is basicaly FOCKED. Same as my HD. Backing up is a MOFO. It takes the DVDRW about 4-6 or 6-8hrs to finish a burn as the HD spins up then it spins down again 🙁.

You will be lucky to get the data off it at any decent rate. When I try to get the data off by copy and past it just times out 🙁

On a second note my computer WOULD NOT BOOT with the busted HD connected to it's IDE controllers. BUT I have a PCI IDE CONTROLLER and it will boot off that. Just takes about 6hrs to do so but it does boot off it.

Good luck.

Aaawwww crap. So should I just leave it booting on my computer until it gets into windows?

Try it on the secondary ide channel as a master drive instead of as a slave on the primary.

And yeah, two hardware questions in off topic in one day

For shame

YES leaving it booting over night it will work. Also when in Windows and when your computer FREEZES do not be alarmed. It is just the busted HD so just let it freeze for a few minutes and it should work again.

If you are able to copy and past stuff off that HD you are LUCKY. I am not so lucky so using my DVDRW to burn stuff really slow off it 🙁

Yes he did, time to get that sleep I need now.

Still no excuse to post hardware troubles in off topic, he should rot in hell for that!

Don't know if you got any answers yet, but usually, check your boot drive if it's jumpered for "Master with slave present", and put it at the end of the IDE ribbon.

I was under the impression that if you're using jumpers, cable select doesn't matter. 😕

I was also under the impression that people should post in the correct forum.
