Why would a server suddenly reject my email address?

I can't send any email all of a sudden but I can still receive it. Anyone know what the reason could be? The message I get is pasted below. It is a reply to a message of a link my friend sent to me.

"The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'mattf3@prodigy.net'. Subject 'Re: Computer Surplus Outlet - Your Liquidator of Today's and Yesterday's Computer P', Account: 'pop3.prodigy', Server: 'SMTP.prodigy.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 5.0.0 Access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC78"

I'll have a new Email address in three weeks because I'm going to cable but I still want tto know why this is happening. I get put on hold forever when I try to call Prodigy.

check in the account options:
1. email address line
2. servers
3. username

Account: 'pop3.prodigy'

I think this means the you're trying to use "pop3.prodigy" as the username for this account, which I doubt is your username.

also check to make sure his email is typed in correctly. (HE could have misspelled in his reply field under his account options)

How were you connected to the internet?

Most, if not all, ISP's outgoing mail servers will reject mail unless you are dialed-in (otherwise connected) via their service.

For example, if I dial-in using e.g. Demon internet, I will not be able to send any e-mail from my Freeserve account.

Note that the bit about 'sender's address was rejected' is only outlook's interpretation of the error message (based only on the stage at which the error occurred). The actual error message from the server was 'access denied' rather than 'address incorrect' - suggesting that you have tried to connect from a banned IP address rather than using a blocked e-mail.

Nope. pop3.prodigy is just the default name that outlook express has given to the mail account. It just uses the name listed in the incoming mail server as the default account name.

Here are some suggestions -

1. Pull up dos prompt - start -> run -> command type in "ping pop3.prodigy.net" and see if you get a response. If so, you mail server is working. If not call tech support and see what's going on.

2. Make sure you are connected to prodigy and not another internet service. Prodigy will only let users logged into their subnet use their outgoing mail servers.

Just remove the mail account and re-create a new one. Make sure all the settings are correct. If it says pop.prodigy then you may have the incoming mail POP3 server typed in wrong.. there should be a .net on the end of it.
