Why would a power cord be optional?

I bought an hdmi 2 port auto switch and it didn't come with a power cord and it said it was optional. At first I thought it was for the led's that were on it, but the power up when a device is hooked up. Any ideas?

i have a component switch that doesn't use a power cord. there are no lights or anything either though.
 
It was on the instructions and it has a power input that I am not using but it works great. Hold on a sec, I will scan it.
