Why would a drive no longer show up?

Ok here is the deal, I'm running win2k server with service pack 4, I have a gateway 6400 which boots off of a scsi drive. I have three other hard drives installed, on 160GB drive on a pci ata 133 controller and a 20GB drive set to slace and a 60GB drive set to master on the primary ide channel.

It's the 60GB drive that won't show up. I've tried switching spots with it and the 20GB and it's still a no go. I've tried it in another system and it worked fine. I tried setting it to slave and during boot up I got a message that was something like, S.M.A.R.T. bad, back up and replace drive.

I usually don't enable smart on my drives so I'm unsure of what it actually does and what it is telling me.

What's going on?

i have a pair of 80 gig hitachi deskstars. I just got them (used) and put one in at a time in my pc as slaves reformat. Same settings on both. same location on the ribbon. I reformat the first one in XP's Administrative tools thingmachig. The 2nd one wouldn't show at all. Granted all settings are exactly the same. So I put it in my other pc, and it shows up just fine. (XP also, same cd, same updates). I reformat and put some data files on it. being it back to PC one and it STILL doesnt appear at all.
heh.... i would like to find out what causes this phenomenon. :Q

I guess you missed my post.

I ran the powermax software from maxtors website, I had to put it in another system just to be reconized. It came back with no errors. I'm really at a loss here.

I would think that it would be a controller issue but it doesn't make sense that it would see one drive on the channel and not the other.

If you have any idea's please throw them out here, I'm always willing try anything.

Have you rechecked that the drive is jumpered correctly? Is the IDE channel enabled in BIOS? Have you tried a different IDE cable?

Yep I've tried all that, slave/master, different ide cable, different power connector, nothing🙁

What's even wierder is that the bios reconizes the drive.

I'm going to try disabling s.m.a.r.t. and see if that does anything.

After trying to get it to work on the motherboards ide channel I decided to just put it on the pci ata card with my other 160GB drive. My drive has finally showed up and is working fine. So the only conclusion I can come to is that and ide port when bad on the mobo. That makes absolutely no sense to me since, a) another drive worked on that ide channel, b) the bios reconizes the drive, c) the other drive on the channel works.

Oh well.

If the 20GB HDD works fine with that cable, on that IDE channel when jumpered to master, on the same connector as the 60GD, then it's not the controller. Are you sure that master on that channel isn't set to disabled? Also some drives need to be jumpered differently when set to master and alone on the IDE chain vs. when there's a master with slave.

what about 2 identical drives where one is being read and the other isn't? under identical conditions.

in my other pc, both show up.

and i ran all tests possible downloaded from the manufacturer

Do you see the drive identified correctly at the POST screen? (At the beep)

BTW you should really start your own thread, otherwise it gets confusing.

I know, that's why this doesn't make sense. Also it's not like I just installed the drive, it's been there for a while and has always been working.

I just checked the event log of the computer and nothing shows up untill after I installed service pack 4.

I also saw this information event, event id 135, "Received a device interface REMOVAL notification for device:
\\?\IDE#DiskMaxtor_5T020H2__________________________TAH71DP0#32544c4a45534354202020202020202020202020#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}"

Where would that have come from?
