to get ad revenue, you need people coming to the site.

to keep people in check, you need mods.

i'm assuming most of the mods here are not paid.

yet Anand is making $ off you. u keep the forums in order, which keep people coming, and some of whom click on the ads.

i have no problems volunteering for a non-profit, but i cant do it for a for-profit company.

How could you work for free?

It's probably a combination of they enjoy the forums and why not have a power trip while you're on the forums? I mean if you're going to participate, at least it's nice to have the power to Ban/Vac anyone that you don't like what they say.

I would pay good money to get to use the ban stick for just a couple minutes.

Don't forget about the hookers and manwhores that they get for modding here. That's good compensation right there.

OP, why do you post for free? anandtech is making money off of you. If you didin't post, there would be no community. Why don't you demand some sort of compensation for your contributions?

We asked to get paid for posting a long time ago. $1 for every 1,000 post.

For some reason the idea got shot down.

because they get satisfaction out of doing the job... really why else did you expect they would take such a responsibility?

Its fun. Rather than pay, the reward is a little respect and ability to make decisions.

I had to temporarily step down when it was painfully obvious I wasn't getting either.

Why would you take any responsibility if it doesn't lead to satisfaction in the end?

I think it's more of a passion thing. Some people may enjoy moderating the forums or just like the fact of being a mod for a rather large forum. And for mods they probably post like everyone else, exept if they see stuff then they can do something about it. I don't think they sit there all day going through every single thread. They probably get PMs when something offensive/against the rules is posted too, some of it they eventually find.

I own a bunch of forums and a game server. That's a lot of babysitting. :p But I enjoy running the sites. I make 100 bucks maybe every 2 months off ads, and well, the game server alone is over 100 bucks per month. :p

But yeah there's more to life then money.

That's unfortunate.
