WHY WONT XP END PROCESSES PROPERLY?

every time i play counterstrike i exit the game using the 'quit' console command. a perfectly normal thing to do.

the problem is i cant run the game again after that. in the task manager i can see two 'cstrike.exe' processes running, one is the old one and one is the new one i just tried to run. ending the old one manually immediately makes the game run, however. this is incerdibly annoying. why doesnt the process end on its own like it should.

when an old counterstrike process is runnign i also cant play other games (even d3d ones).

any help appreciated! thx!

thought i might add taht im runnign it in compatibility mode for windows ME...

HAS ANYONE MANAGED TO RUN COUNTERSTRIKE (OPENGL) WITHOUT ANY COMPATIBILITY MODES AND PERFORMANCE LOSSES?

I ran cs pretty well with xp ...

but i'm using a geforce ddr ... so i'm not sure if the frame and tearing is because of the os ... the vsync off or the video card ...

i had cs crash on me after a few hours though ...

hey i have the same problem! it wont end process on CS or when i quit CS it locks the computer up hard forcing me to reset it.
i have a geforce 2 mx 400. i would love to figure out a fix for this

it wouldnt end and then i couldnt start up another instance, the process woulnt end, and it would just sit there for a certain amount of time, and then BSOD.
 
runs fine here (see 'myrigthingy')

Are you running punkbuster, gamespy, bots, ect....?

I'm using non-retail version 1.3, if that helps ????
 
i took mine off the compatibility mode and it seems to end process now but still it randomly crashes my computer when i exit.

Yup.. same here and I thought it was only me. It doesn't happen every single time though. For me, it's happened about every 4th or 5th time.
 
yeah same for me, i found its a lot less apt to crash if i close everything while im running it. i used to leave aim and irc open but now i close them. id love to be able to fix this so i can keep it open.
 
Same problem, instead of quiting the game I alt-tab out and end the task. Would love a solution to this one...

 
im using retail 1.3 and punkbuster... i have bots installed but rarely use em...

and ogc.. hmm that could be it 😀 😀

cuz it runs v choppy and random crashes without comp. mode..
